The Kickstand (in Your Face)

In lieu of the usual Sunday material—sorry guys, still busy—my blog director suggested I post something brief about my blossoming new passion: mixology. (Thanks for the idea, Pip!)

A ways back I read an article on Paste outlining some musicians’ favoured cocktails, and being a bit of  Fernet fan I was immediately curious to try what Jim Ward calls a Kickstand (I say this because I can’t seem to find the recipe anywhere else):

  • 1 1/2 oz bourbon
  • 1/2 oz Fernet Branca
  • 1/4 oz grenadine

The procedure is straight forward enough: add the ingredients in a cocktail shaker with ice, shake, strain into a glass with fresh ice, and drink! (Oh, you can add a cherry for garnish, but… well, I didn’t.)

The bourbon I have on hand is Booker’s, and with its high proof (127.4!) there’s definitely an extra punch to what would otherwise be an already fairly intense cocktail. In honour of this added oomph, I’ve renamed it the Kickstand in the Face, hence the menacing Bruce Lee picture. (For the record, I’ve never been kicked in the face by Bruce Lee so I can’t speak to the accuracy of my analogy, but this bourbon doesn’t fuck around.)
